Q&A with our Jr. Art Director Emma

Published: 08 February 2024

Our Jr. Art Director Emma shares her journey, inspirations, and favourite aspects of her role at Doing Goods. And because it’s Valentine’s Day, she also shares the – personal – story behind our cute card holder Robbie The Frog.

What is your background in design?

Emma: “I studied graphic design at CIBAB in Zwolle, The Netherlands. Initially, my dream was to work as a graphic designer for magazines, and I had secured an internship at Glamour and ELLE. However, Doing Goods caught my eye as an all-around creative opportunity, and the prospect of learning a variety of skills appealed to me. When I joined, Doing Goods had just a few thousand followers on Instagram, and I was drawn to its quirky and artistic aesthetic. I had a meeting with Aanyoung at the office and we instantly clicked. Throughout my internship, I gained valuable insights into merging ancient craftsmanship with modern designs. I resonate with the treasure-hunting philosophy that still defines Doing Goods today, finding this approach to creating truly magical.”

When did you start working at Doing Goods?

E: “I started as an intern and now, after working here for five years, I am Junior Art Director. After completing my studies, I spent a year living and working in my home town in Friesland. Afterwards, I traveled to Bali on my last bit of savings. I eventually moved back to Amsterdam and started working for Doing Goods as a Junior Creative, focusing on designing and social media for many years, embracing the learning-by-doing philosophy.”

What is your favorite aspect of your job as Jr. Art Director?

E: “The freedom to create is my favorite aspect. I can propose and evolve my ideas and plans. Working with Aanyoung has been fantastic; her experience complements my creativity well. The flexibility of the role allowed me to grow significantly, especially during the year when Aanyoung was expecting twins.”

Can you share something about your experience in India?

E: “India is a crucial part of Doing Goods, and my first visit in October 2021 was truly amazing. Traveling there with our Head of Sales Heleen, we immersed ourselves in the culture, met the team in India, and visited our new workshop. Witnessing the craftsmanship firsthand was mind-blowing. Exploring markets, discovering new materials, and experiencing the family-like atmosphere in the workshop added a deeper layer to the uniqueness of Doing Goods.”

Tell us the story behind Robbie The Frog. How did the idea come about?

E: “The idea for Robbie The Frog came to me when strolling through a small, random shop where a tiny frog figurine caught my eye. I ended up placing it on my desk and it inspired me to create a card holder in the form of a green frog with a heart on top. Aanyoung jokingly suggested to call it Robbie The Frog, since I was dating my now boyfriend Robert at the time. It was a sort of subtle declaration of affection, and when it was released, I gave it to Robert as a gift (laughing).”

Talking about love, what is your favourite date spot in Amsterdam?

E: “Restaurant De Belhamel is my favourite spot. Located in a charming part of Amsterdam by the canal, it’s very romantic, with art nouveau details adding to its charm. Cycling there along the canals with someone special is a perfect date night if you ask me.”

And along with Robbie The Frog, what are your favourite products?

E: “Besides Robbie, I love the Miracle Fish Vase and the Tatsu Heritage Rug. The fish vase, being our first vase, is particularly interesting as it has a coating that allows it to hold water despite being made of brass.”
