At Doing Goods, the age-old art of block printing takes center stage. We are proud to share our passion for this technique, employed by our artisans in India to craft all of our textiles: throws, pillows, fabric baskets and more. Join us as we unravel the world of block printing and its remarkable beauty.

The intricacies of block printing

At Doing Goods, we celebrate the rich heritage of block printing, a technique that has stood the test of time. In fact, block printing is believed to be the oldest printmaking technique in the world with its origins in China over 4000 years ago. If you ask us, it’s also the most beautiful printmaking technique there is. It allows us to transform our modern designs into one of a kind throws, pillows and more.

Passed down through generations, this meticulous craft involves using hand-carved wooden blocks to apply intricate patterns onto fabric. The precision and expertise required make each piece truly unique, showcasing the dedication of our artisans and their commitment to preserving this ancient art form. Which we love to contribute to.

How does block printing work?

All our patterns are designed in our Amsterdam studio. Once complete, they embark on a journey to our atelier in India, where our craftsmen carve them into wooden blocks. These blocks are carefully inked and used as stamps upon our coveted 100% cotton fabric. In the printing process, each color takes its turn, applied one block at a time, layer by layer. It is an art that demands precision and a lot of patience.

Masterful craftsmen

Our skilled Indian artisans are masters of the block printing technique. They breathe life into each textile through careful placement and rhythmic stamping of the wooden blocks. Their years of experience and attention to detail ensure that every motif is beautifully transferred onto the fabric, resulting in stunning patterns and designs that captivate the senses.

From generation to generation

The craftsmen we work with were taught by their parents, who were, in turn, taught by theirs – each generation working almost exactly as the one before. They are real experts who make each item with patience and care.

The beauty of handcrafted textiles

The charm of block printing lies in its imperfections, which bear testament to its handmade nature. Each textile carries the marks of the artisan’s touch, making it truly one-of-a-kind. The natural variations in color, texture, and alignment add character and depth, creating a sense of authenticity that cannot be replicated by mass-produced alternatives.

“Our oh-so lovely textiles are printed by hand with carved wooden blocks and oh-so versatile.”

Sun-kissed quality

Large pieces of printed fabric are sun-dried. Back in our workshop we use the fabrics to make throws, pillows and other accessories.
